• Know your target followers.

It’s okay to have variety of followers, but if you really want long-lasting followers you must know what type of followers you want to be followed.  That will be your target followers.

• • Age
  • Occupation
  • Interests

• Choose a profile picture according to your target followers.

Since your picture will serve as the window to your profile, use it to attract followers. I will explain the effects regarding on the type of profile picture you use.

• • Formal

Formal photos, shows professionalism. It increases the possibility of having a client or a business partner on twitter. When people found you look like a business person, you may be followed by other business persons, and those who are interested on making a business.

• • Trendy

Photos that look so pop or trendy can attract teenager twitter users, teenagers love to hear from people who’s the same age as them. Most of the teenagers prefer following good looking people regardless of its popularity. So go find your best photo and use it to attract followers.

• • Picture of a Popular Person

The problem of not using your own photo is that people won’t easily trust you. If you’re using photos of a popular person, twitter users will follow you just because they love the popular person in the picture, they might think that you have the same interest and you might be a good friend. Avoid this, as much as possible, unless it is a fan twitter page.

• • Picture of a particular thing

People must avoid using picture of a thing as their profile photo. It looks so boring, not interesting, and spammy (especially if you use photo that displays branded thing).

• • Picture of an animal

Animal lovers might follow twitter profiles with animal photo. Though not most of the twitter users are pet lover, I suggest you to use a picture of you with your pet, if you really want to display your pet.

• • Photo text

Photo text sometimes looks so spammy, and not cool. Personally, I never get attracted to those accounts which use photo text as their profile picture. If you use logo of your website or company, be sure that it is a well-known site or company, or else you won’t have any followers.

• • Semi-naked

Don’t expect good followers here, you will be just followed by porn site spam twitter accounts, or by people who love seeing semi-naked accounts. Again, don’t do this unless you’re a popular personality. If your photo contains more than just semi-naked photo (sexual poses, full nudity, etc.) expect to be reported on twitter.

• Follow.

You must also follow other Twitter users in order to get more followers but that won’t get followers as is, you have to make friends. Follow and make friends to those who have lots of followers but lesser following count, it may be the rough road to take but if you succeed, guaranteed great result. If you follow those profiles that have equal or more following ratio, there is a good possibility of follow backs. It works, but you don’t want to have tons of updates on the homepage of your twitter because you followed lots of twitter account, don’t you?

• Reply

Replying is one form of acquiring friend and long-lasting follower. If they feel that they’ve been ignored they might un-follow you. If you really have tons of replies, you can look for the majority topic of their replies and answer it by tweeting it and tell them that you can’t tag each of them.

• Don’t spam, just share

As a follower, it is good to see cool links from the person you follow, but don’t overdo it. People followed you for your posts or updates. If they got annoyed they might unfollow you, or worse report your tweets as a spam. You don’t want that to happen, or do you?

• Post tweets within your niche.

People followed you because you post tweets that interest them, if you do a sudden change of topic, they might unfollow you. Just like you, they follow people because they love to read the person’s tweets, if the person change its topic from fashion to cooking (not related) they might really stop following the person.

• Follow Back

Some people follow you because they want to be followed back, if you failed to follow them back they might unfollow you. What you must do is follow them; who knows, you might like their tweets? Follow them for a meantime, then continue tweeting, once they get used to your tweets, they might have a hard time unfollowing you. Follow them for at least 21 days (3 weeks) to make sure that you posted what you normally post, and it becomes a habit to them to read your tweets.

• Join the Trending Topics

Though trending topics can only increase the possibility of page views, people might still follow you based on your tweets or profile picture.

• SEO

Make sure that you use twitter as your keyword. So that once a person looks for twitter on the Google, your profile will be one of the results. This is probably one of the hardest but surest ways of getting followers. [I will post an article about SEO soon.]

• Put link to your twitter page

Include a link to your twitter page on your signature on forums or mails. If you have website or blog there’s a widgets that stream your twitter updates as well as a link to your twitter page.  The main idea here is promoting your twitter on other websites.

• Do what you usually do, Tweet.

Nothing more to say about this; just do what you usually / originally / naturally do, and enjoy it while growing you followers.

The result of the increase of followers may vary depending on your popularity, if you’re a superstar I assure you, you don’t need to follow these tips.

Twitter is not a game of gaining tons of followers, but of course we want to be heard that’s why we want to have lots of followers. Before shifting to twitter or to the next article, you still have to keep in mind that it’s just a number; what’s more important is who follows you. Happy tweeting.
