Yesterday I forgot four passwords, two book titles, and one pair of pants despite sticky notes reminding me of each. Since then, I’ve read HowStuffWorks’ suggestions on improving memory. I forgot if they worked, but let’s review ‘em anyway.

Note that none of these methods are foolproof or ideal individually. What you really need to do is look at your lifestyle and figure out a combination that works best for you. That said, here are some suggestions:

Easy on That Bottle, You Lush

If you’ve had a night of drinking planned—I’m looking at all those folks using the #drunkmodo tag—then put down the bottle for a moment. While you’ll feel great and forget all your worries for a bit, heavy drinking can not only leave you wondering why you took that funny-smelling girl home, but it can also have some pretty adverse effects on your memory in general.

The good news? The occasional drink here and there can be good for your memory. In fact, “some studies have found that moderate drinkers do better on certain tests of memory and cognition than nondrinkers and heavy drinkers.”

Turn That Frown Upside Down

Depression increases cortisol levels in the bloodstream, increased cortisol levels affect the hippocampus which is the “clearing center for short-term memory,” and next thing you know, you’re struggling to remember anything new.

Sure, improving your memory isn’t exactly easy if you’re struggling with depression, but the knowledge that it might be the source of your difficulties can help you find a way to treat the issue—be it by seeking professional help or sorting out something that’s going on in your life.

Get Off the Couch

It’s all too easy to find excuses to avoid exercise, but eventually the laziness will affect your ability to remember if you’ve used the same excuse 15 or 16 times already:

The brain depends on energy received through a constant intake of oxygen and nutrients from the bloodstream, and when those nutrients don’t arrive, the brain’s ability to work is compromised

The solution? Get off the couch or away from the desk or just plain out of the house. Get moving a bit. No one’s asking you to run a marathon, but a bit of exercise will leave your brain—and your hips—happier.

Think in Pictures

The examples HowStuffWorks gives to explain thinking in pictures are goofy, but they do help with the explain the idea and why it works:

Say you place your eyeglasses on the kitchen table. When you do so, imagine your eyeglasses eating all the food on the table. Later, when you’re wondering where your glasses are, your brain has this image in the bank.

Well, how could that not work? Like you’d forget the mental image of your glasses eating your dinner.

Ah-ttention!

This couldn’t be more obvious, but to remember things you need to pay attention to them in the first place. If you’re just nodding along and watching TV as your pal tells you about his favorite books, odds are you won’t recall them later on. But if you’d listened to him actively and asked questions, you would find it easier to recall his secret love of Twilight the next day.

Word Association

For the longest time I struggled to remember that the last name for Lifehacker’s Kevin was Purdy. But then he posted a project which I deemed oh-so-pretty that for some reason I began to associate a silly spelling of pretty, purty, with Kevin. Pretty, purty, Purdy. Tada! Since then I’ve never forgotten Kevin’s last name or the fact that he posts pretty projects on occasion.

Sometimes silly wordplay or term association can help you remember people’s names or traits. Yes, it really can get ridiculous, but it works. And it’s not like you really have to tell someone how you remember his or her name.

Lump Things Together

Tell me your phone number. Ok, you don’t really have to tell me, but say it to yourself. Do you notice how you seem to naturally pause at certain points? Three numbers—pause—three numbers—pause—four numbers. That’s because you memorize things in little chunks like that. It helps to break things down and group them. Sometimes these “chunks” of information can be more easily recalled if you add word association to the mix.

Take After Hannibal Lecter

Hannibal Lecter was known for using the method of loci, the method of location, to aid his memory. He imagined walking through a castle-like home and pictured objects which he associated with memories. You can use the same method by visualizing a home or a road and picturing whatever you’re memorizing as things or people along the way.

Look Around

You can use your environment to trigger memories. Let’s say you need to burn a CD for someone. Take a blank disk and place it on top of your desk. Later on it will stand out to you and wondering why it’s there will make you recall that you needed to burn a copy of “Party in the USA” for someone.

Try, Try Again

Repetition, repetition, repetition. Whether it’s repeating a phone number until you remember it or practicing one of these memory methods until it sticks, repetition is key.

Got it? Remember it? It’s OK, there won’t be a test, but I do want to know if you use some of these methods and whether they work for you. Or do you have a great trick that wasn’t mentioned? [HowStuffWorks—Picture by AuthenticEccentric]

Memory [Forever] is our week-long consideration of what it really means when our memories, encoded in bits, flow in a million directions, and might truly live forever.

Use sharp lines for sharp businesses, smooth lines for smooth businesses.

The logo must have some connection to what it is representing.

A photo does not make a logo.

You must surprise customers with presentation.

Do not use more than two fonts.

Each element of the logo needs to be aligned. Left, center, right, top, or bottom.

The logo should look solid, with no trailing elements.

Know who is going to be looking at the logo before you think of ideas for it.

Always choose function over innovation.

If the brand name is memorable, the brand name should be the logo.

The logo should be recognizable when mirrored.

Even large companies need small logos.

Everyone should like the logo design, not just the business that will use it.

Create variations. The more variations, the more likely you are to get it right.

The logo must look consistent across multiple platforms.

The logo must be easy to describe.

Do not use taglines in the logo.

Sketch out ideas using paper and pencil before working on a computer.

Keep the design simple.

Do not use any “swoosh” or “globe”symbols.

The logo should not be distracting.

It should be honest in its representation.

The logo should be balanced visually.

Avoid bright, neon colors and dark, dull colors.

The logo must not break any of the above rules.

Know your target followers.

It’s okay to have variety of followers, but if you really want long-lasting followers you must know what type of followers you want to be followed. That will be your target followers.

Age

Occupation

Interests

Choose a profile picture according to your target followers.

Since your picture will serve as the window to your profile, use it to attract followers. I will explain the effects regarding on the type of profile picture you use.

Formal

Formal photos, shows professionalism. It increases the possibility of having a client or a business partner on twitter. When people found you look like a business person, you may be followed by other business persons, and those who are interested on making a business.

Trendy

Photos that look so pop or trendy can attract teenager twitter users, teenagers love to hear from people who’s the same age as them. Most of the teenagers prefer following good looking people regardless of its popularity. So go find your best photo and use it to attract followers.

Picture of a Popular Person

The problem of not using your own photo is that people won’t easily trust you. If you’re using photos of a popular person, twitter users will follow you just because they love the popular person in the picture, they might think that you have the same interest and you might be a good friend. Avoid this, as much as possible, unless it is a fan twitter page.

Picture of a particular thing

People must avoid using picture of a thing as their profile photo. It looks so boring, not interesting, and spammy (especially if you use photo that displays branded thing).

Picture of an animal

Animal lovers might follow twitter profiles with animal photo. Though not most of the twitter users are pet lover, I suggest you to use a picture of you with your pet, if you really want to display your pet.

Photo text

Photo text sometimes looks so spammy, and not cool. Personally, I never get attracted to those accounts which use photo text as their profile picture. If you use logo of your website or company, be sure that it is a well-known site or company, or else you won’t have any followers.

Semi-naked

Don’t expect good followers here, you will be just followed by porn site spam twitter accounts, or by people who love seeing semi-naked accounts. Again, don’t do this unless you’re a popular personality. If your photo contains more than just semi-naked photo (sexual poses, full nudity, etc.) expect to be reported on twitter.

Follow.

You must also follow other Twitter users in order to get more followers but that won’t get followers as is, you have to make friends. Follow and make friends to those who have lots of followers but lesser following count, it may be the rough road to take but if you succeed, guaranteed great result. If you follow those profiles that have equal or more following ratio, there is a good possibility of follow backs. It works, but you don’t want to have tons of updates on the homepage of your twitter because you followed lots of twitter account, don’t you?

Reply

Replying is one form of acquiring friend and long-lasting follower. If they feel that they’ve been ignored they might un-follow you. If you really have tons of replies, you can look for the majority topic of their replies and answer it by tweeting it and tell them that you can’t tag each of them.

Don’t spam, just share

As a follower, it is good to see cool links from the person you follow, but don’t overdo it. People followed you for your posts or updates. If they got annoyed they might unfollow you, or worse report your tweets as a spam. You don’t want that to happen, or do you?

Post tweets within your niche.

People followed you because you post tweets that interest them, if you do a sudden change of topic, they might unfollow you. Just like you, they follow people because they love to read the person’s tweets, if the person change its topic from fashion to cooking (not related) they might really stop following the person.

Follow Back

Some people follow you because they want to be followed back, if you failed to follow them back they might unfollow you. What you must do is follow them; who knows, you might like their tweets? Follow them for a meantime, then continue tweeting, once they get used to your tweets, they might have a hard time unfollowing you. Follow them for at least 21 days (3 weeks) to make sure that you posted what you normally post, and it becomes a habit to them to read your tweets.

Join the Trending Topics

Though trending topics can only increase the possibility of page views, people might still follow you based on your tweets or profile picture.

SEO

Make sure that you use twitter as your keyword. So that once a person looks for twitter on the Google, your profile will be one of the results. This is probably one of the hardest but surest ways of getting followers. [I will post an article about SEO soon.]

Put link to your twitter page

Include a link to your twitter page on your signature on forums or mails. If you have website or blog there’s a widgets that stream your twitter updates as well as a link to your twitter page. The main idea here is promoting your twitter on other websites.

Do what you usually do, Tweet.

Nothing more to say about this; just do what you usually / originally / naturally do, and enjoy it while growing you followers.

The result of the increase of followers may vary depending on your popularity, if you’re a superstar I assure you, you don’t need to follow these tips.

Twitter is not a game of gaining tons of followers, but of course we want to be heard that’s why we want to have lots of followers. Before shifting to twitter or to the next article, you still have to keep in mind that it’s just a number; what’s more important is who follows you. Happy tweeting.

Introduction to Detecting Lies:

The following techniques to telling if someone is lying are often used by police and security experts. This knowledge is also useful for managers, employers, and for anyone to use in everyday situations where telling the truth from a lie can help prevent you from being a victim of fraud/scams and other deceptions.

Warning: Sometimes Ignorance is bliss; after gaining this knowledge, you may be hurt when it is obvious that someone is lying to you.

Signs of Deception:

Body Language of Lies:

• Physical expression will be limited and stiff, with few arm and hand movements. Hand, arm and leg movement are toward their own body the liar takes up less space.

• A person who is lying to you will avoid making eye contact.

• Hands touching their face, throat & mouth. Touching or scratching the nose or behind their ear. Not likely to touch his chest/heart with an open hand.

Emotional Gestures & Contradiction

• Timing and duration of emotional gestures and emotions are off a normal pace. The display of emotion is delayed, stays longer it would naturally, then stops suddenly.

• Timing is off between emotions gestures/expressions and words. Example: Someone says “I love it!” when receiving a gift, and then smile after making that statement, rather then at the same time the statement is made.

• Gestures/expressions don’t match the verbal statement, such as frowning when saying “I love you.”

• Expressions are limited to mouth movements when someone is faking emotions (like happy, surprised, sad, awe, )instead of the whole face. For example; when someone smiles naturally their whole face is involved: jaw/cheek movement, eyes and forehead push down, etc.

Interactions and Reactions

• A guilty person gets defensive. An innocent person will often go on the offensive.

• A liar is uncomfortable facing his questioner/accuser and may turn his head or body away.

• A liar might unconsciously place objects (book, coffee cup, etc.) between themselves and you.

Verbal Context and Content

• A liar will use your words to make answer a question. When asked, “Did you eat the last cookie?” The liar answers, “No, I did not eat the last cookie.”

•A statement with a contraction is more likely to be truthful: “ I didn’t do it” instead of “I did not do it”

• Liars sometimes avoid “lying” by not making direct statements. They imply answers instead of denying something directly.

• The guilty person may speak more than natural, adding unnecessary details to convince you… they are not comfortable with silence or pauses in the conversation.

• A liar may leave out pronouns and speak in a monotonous tone. When a truthful statement is made the pronoun is emphasized as much or more than the rest of the words in a statement.

• Words may be garbled and spoken softly, and syntax and grammar may be off. In other
words, his sentences will likely be muddled rather than emphasized.

• The use of distancing language.

Other signs of a lie:

• If you believe someone is lying, then change subject of a conversation quickly, a liar follows along willingly and becomes more relaxed. The guilty wants the subject changed; an innocent person may be confused by the sudden change in topics and will want to back to the previous subject.

• Using humor or sarcasm to avoid a subject.

Final Notes:

Obviously, just because someone exhibits one or more of these signs does not make them a liar. The above behaviors should be compared to a persons base (normal) behavior whenever possible.

Most lie detecting experts agree that a combination of body language and other cues must be used to make an educated guess on whether someone is telling the truth or a lie.

1. Sit in a straight, comfortable chair in a well lit place in front of your computer.

2. Log onto MSN and ICQ (be sure to go on away!). Check your email.

3. Read over the assignment carefully, to make certain you understand it.

4. Walk down to the vending machines and buy some chocolate to help you concentrate.

5. Check your email.

6. Call up a friend and ask if he/she wants to go to grab a coffee. Just to get settled down and ready to work.

7. When you get back to your room, sit in a straight, comfortable chair in a clean, well lit place.

8. Read over the assignment again to make absolutely certain you understand it.

9. Check your email.

10. You know, you haven’t written to that kid you met at camp since fourth grade. You’d better write that letter now and get it out of the way so you can concentrate.

11. Look at your teeth in the bathroom mirror.

12. Grab some mp3z off of kazaa.

13. Check your email. ANY OF THIS SOUND FAMILIAR YET?!

course, the college, the world at large.

18. Walk to the store and buy a pack of gum. You’ve probably run out.

19. While you’ve got the gum you may as well buy a magazine and read it.

20. Check your email.

21. Check the newspaper listings to make sure you aren’t missing something truly worthwhile on TV.

22. Play some solitare (or age of legends!).

23. Check out bored.com.

24. Wash your hands.

25. Call up a friend to see how much they have done, probably haven’t started either.

26. Look through your housemate’s book of pictures from home. Ask who everyone is.

27. Sit down and do some serious thinking about your plans for the future.

28. Check to see if bored.com has been updated yet.

29. Check your email and listen to your new mp3z.

30. You should be rebooting by now, assuming that windows is crashing on schedule.

31. Read over the assignment one more time, just for heck of it.

32. Scoot your chair across the room to the window and watch the sunrise.

33. Lie face down on the floor and moan.

34. Punch the wall and break something.

35. Check your email.

36. Mumble obscenities.

37. 5am – start hacking on the paper without stopping. 6am -paper is finished.

38. Complain to everyone that you didn’t get any sleep because you had to write that stupid paper.

STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN. That’s the basic rule of crossing the streets, but what if something happening isn’t just so ordinary? Let’s still follow the basic rule but in addition I’ll try to make this article informative and comprehensive.

Stop. Always stop when you reach the point where you’re going to cross. If you cross straight away vehicles might not notice you or you might not be notice an upcoming vehicle.

Look. Observation is the key for a successful crossing. You might observe these things:

Traffic Lights. Remember that GREEN Light indicates Go and RED Light means stop, you don’t have to know what ORANGE (or sometimes it is color YELLOW) indicates. If a pedestrian’s traffic light is colored GREEN then you may cross, if not then don’t, no matter if it’s RED, ORANGE, or YELLOW you might don’t want to be in the middle of the street when the lights go RED don’t you?

Vehicles. Knowing that it is a street so sometimes there’s no traffic light, so you have to observe vehicles.

Don’t Cross

If vehicles are near and running

If vehicles are far but running high-speed

If vehicles are far but it is an emergency vehicles (ambulance, fire truck, etc.)

Do Cross

If vehicles aren’t running

If vehicles are running but way too far

If vehicles are running but running slow

If there’s no vehicle at all

Other Pedestrians. It’s better to cross with other pedestrians so wait and cross with them if there’s any.

Location. Be sure that you’re crossing on a right place. If there are no pedestrian crossing lane, cross where the street is level to avoid vehicles that are running high-speed.

Listen. You observed that it is now safe to cross, and then it is now time to listen for a vehicle that sounds its horn, if that’s the case then stay to your location until that vehicle passes by.

While crossing, keep an eye contact with the driver, and let them know that you’re crossing.

If things certainly went wrong then these are the things that you must not do.

If you’re caught in the middle of the street then suddenly a vehicle is moving up to you, just don’t go back. Vehicles will turn to where you came from.

If you’re caught in the middle of the street then suddenly the traffic light tells vehicle to go then stop right where you are and move only when there are lesser vehicles.

No matter what the situation is don’t ever run. Your movements must be predictable by the drivers.

Crossing a street is somehow life-risky so before crossing a street make sure that there is no underpass or overpass that could save you a cross on street, remember to be safe than sorry. Have a nice street crossing.
